What’s behind Trump’s rant about the midterm elections yesterday?

“I want to see elections be honest, and if a state can’t run an election, I think the people behind me should do something about it,” said Trump yesterday during the bill-signing ceremony to reopen the federal government.

This is not an isolated remark.

In a podcast released Monday, Trump called on Republicans to “take over” voting procedures in 15 states. Although he didn’t name them, they are obviously the ones he lost in 2020.

A week ago under the direct and unprecedented supervision of national intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard, the FBI executed a search warrant at the elections warehouse in Fulton County, Georgia and seized the ballots from the 2020 presidential election. The next day Gabbard placed a call phone call to Trump and he spoke directly to frontline agents, a questionable move at best.

Since May 2025 the Trump administration has demanded complete voter rolls from 44 states and the District of Columbia. So far, it has sued 24 states that refused to give up the data.

In spite of the facts, Trump continues to trumpet his false claims that the 2020 election was rigged.

His intent is clear.

He’s engaged in a multi-pronged effort to undermine confidence in the 2026 midterms, and justify a grab for control over the elections process, a power Constitutionally reserved for the states.

Can he really do that? Probably not, but he will try. says Robert Reich in his piece yesterday.
