(Note: I posted this on the NSD Facebook page, as well as my personal page. FB in its not-so-infinite wisdom saw fit to remove the one on the NSD page. For being obscene, I guess. Obscene? A commentary on actual bills before the Texas Lege? Now that’s what I call obscene!)
Texas Republicans continue to erase citizens’ freedoms – in the voting booth, doctor’s office, and, of course, in the bedroom. Most recently is a pair of Dildo Bills, one in the Senate, one in the House.
The Senate Dildo Bill was introduced by none other than State Sen Angela Paxton, wife of AG Ken Paxton, the Senate Dildo would require age verification for the sale of "obscene devices"—aka sex toys—bought online.
The House Dildo, HB1549, was filed by state Rep Hillary Hickman (R-Midland). The House Dildo would ban retailers from selling "obscene devices" unless they're a "sexually oriented" business. That ban would mean mainstream retailers such as Walmart, Target, CVS and Walgreen's would be banned from selling the devices.
There is already on the books a statute banning ownership of "six or more obscene devices" in the state, according to Texas Penal Code Section 43.23. An "obscene device." according to Texas Penal Code Section 43.21, means "a device including a dildo or artificial vagina, designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs."
The Lege in 2023 passed a law requiring adult-content websites, including PornHub, to use an age-verification service to confirm users are over 18 years old.
The GOP and its Christian nationalist adherents, count on people shying away from defending First Amendment rights on a battlefield of porn and sex toys.
But what’s next? And remember: ‘When they came for the dildos, I did not use one… etc
And public schools remain grossly underfunded.
