Think you are free to marry and live with the person of your dreams in your hometown? Not so fast, ruled the conservatives on the US Supreme Court!
The Supremes, in the majority’s infinite ignorance, has unbelievably ruled that American citizens do not have the right to marry and live with the spouse of their choice. The recent ruling not only sharply restricts Americans’ right to bring spouses to the US, but many fear that it threatens hard-won marriage equality. (1)
And Texas Senator Ted Can-Cruz can’t wait for that to happen. — his record speaks for itself, having strongly condemned the court’s landmark decision protecting same-sex marriage. (2)
The GOP-dominated US Supreme Court ruled that that citizens do not have “a fundamental liberty interest” in bringing noncitizen spouses to the country. This prompted Justice Sonia Sotomayor to issue an impassioned dissent warning that the court is on the way to undermining marriage rights for same-sex couples.
In her dissent, Sotomayor quoted the 2015 marriage equality ruling, Obergefell v Hodges: “The right to marry is fundamental as a matter of history and tradition.” She wrote “that there is no question that excluding a citizen’s spouse burdens her right to marriage, and that burden requires the Government to provide at least a factual basis for its decision.” (1,3,4)
With a major threat to same-sex marriages looming, it’s time to replace the anti-LGBTQ Can-Cruz with a Senator who cares about all Texans snd will protect their freedoms — not take them away.
