NSD members have asked for information about the candidates for the Lago Vista ISD school board elections. It always seems to be difficult to find information on the candidates, but we have come up with some data that you might find helpful. We do not have a recommendation for whom you should vote.
There are two board positions on the ballot this election. Place 7 has the incumbent, Kevin Walker, running unopposed. Several residents have asked why LVISD couldn’t have just appointed Walker, instead of putting him on the ballot. Seems like a good question, and we don’t know the answer.
In Place 6, we have a choice between incumbent David Scott, and challenger Brian Caller. Scott is a long-time board member, and seems to be serving competently, but we could not find any current campaign materials describing his positions.
We found the following information about Brian Caller in the League of Women Voters’ guide for 2024. David Scott did not respond to the LWV survey questions by press time, so we don’t know how he would have answered their questions.
Qualifications: What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
Caller: 20+ years experience working in large organizations focusing on financial excellence, strategy creation/execution, and people development; Director on two non-profit boards serving as the treasurer.
Budget: How would you prioritize school budget spending for staff and facilities?
Caller: Prioritizing budgets for staff and facilities should focus on maximizing student outcomes and creating a safe, optimal learning environment. Investing in teachers and support staff, who directly impact student success, is top priority. However, this should not compromise maintaining and improving the learning environment, including modern classrooms, technology, and extracurricular spaces.
Charter Schools: What do you see as the role of charter schools in public education?
Caller: Charter schools can play a unique role in public education by offering alternative models that foster innovation in teaching, curricula, and collaboration. Tailoring their approaches to student needs, they can become hubs of innovation. They must be held to the same standards as traditional schools regarding performance, complement public education, and contribute to maximizing student achievement.
Parental Input: What is your position regarding parental input in book selection in school libraries?
Caller: School libraries are vital for student development and require a clear, transparent book selection process. This process should be inclusive, allowing parents to voice suggestions and concerns. Ultimately, educators should make the final decisions to ensure alignment with educational goals and to include diverse topics and perspectives that foster curiosity and critical thinking
