On Friday in a press conference in Arizona, Noem claimed elections were under the DHS’s mission of “maintaining critical infrastructure.”
She doubled down on Sunday, “Yes, we must build election infrastructure that makes it easy and secure for eligible American citizens to vote—while preventing non-citizens, including illegal aliens, from casting ballots.”
This is Trump’s latest salvo to take over the midterm elections, which he will surely lose without his thumb on the scale.
It comes on the heels of House passage last Thursday of the so-called SAVE Act requiring that people produce a birth certificate or passport when registering to vote. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, 21 million Americans, or 9% of the voting public, lack easy access to these documents.
Dan Rather reports that young voters and people of color, who tend to vote Democratic, would be disproportionately affected, as well as women who change their last names when they marry.
Trump is calling for the elimination of the filibuster in order to get the SAVE Act passed by the Senate, adding “There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!”
Writes Dan Rather about Trump’s increasingly desperate attempts to conjure up Republican wins in November, “This election is shaping up to be one of the most consequential of my lifetime. The very foundation of our constitutional republic, based on the principles of freedom and democracy, is at stake.”
