Holly Taylor is the clear choice for Chief Judge of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, and deserves your vote. Like all Democratic candidates relevant to the North Shore, the NSD has endorsed Taylor.
Taylor spoke to the Oct 26 NSD Meet & Greet via Zoom while literally block walking in southwest Houston.
She quipped that the Court of Crii is “the most important Texas court that most Texans have never heard of.
“It is our Supreme Court for criminal cases here in Texas, and its decisions are absolutely critical to safeguarding our constitutional rights and to the integrity of criminal justice.”
Taylor is highly qualified to be Chief Judge. A carerre criminal law practitioner, she is now the Director of the Public Integrity and Complex Crimes Division at the Travis County DA’s office, and is board-certified in criminal appellate law. Taylor oversees the DA’s White Collar Crime Division, and works closely with its Conviction Integrity Unit.
“We work to make sure that there are no innocent people siting in prision in Travis County,” Taylor explained.
Conversely, her Trump-endorsed opponent, who is not the incumbent, is primarily a civil practitioner, and has never even litigated a case in the Court of Criminal Appeals.
Taylor, meanwhile, previously worked for the Court as rules attorney.
The Court of Criminal Appeals has many functions, including deciding on the constitutionality of new criminal laws. “This is the court at the highest level in Texas will be making decision about constitutionality [of criminal laws],” she said.
This court is also where death-penalty cases are appealed.
It hears thousands of appeals of criminal cases each year, some involving claims of actual innocence, some invoking Texas’s extant, but some say flawed “junk science” statute.
This 2013 law allows a person convicted of a crime to seek relief if the evidence used against them is no longer credible. This includes bite-mark analysis, and shaken-baby syndrome, among others.
Critics say the Texas judicial system has been deliberately weakened by misinterpretation from the Court of Criminal Appeals.
Taylor’s background is perfect for this.
She is perfect for this judgeship. Vote for Taylor!
