The good guys have been hit over the head plenty in the 119th Texas Legislature, but defeated a proposed constitutional amendment that would have banned taxes on carbon. While Dems are in the minority, the 150-member Texas House requires a two-thirds supermajority to pass proposed constitutional amendments. They don’t have that many votes.
House Democrats scored a big win yesterday when they defeated Daniel Alder’s (R-HD06) carbon tax ban.
Democratic House leaders spoke against this bill, a constitutional amendment that would have needed 100 votes to pass. It failed with a vote of 93-47.
The Texas Democratic Party has a plank supporting implementation of a carbon tax to fight climate change.
Nonetheless, seven Democrats still voted for this bill, going against their constituents, the party, and climate action. Those Democrats are:
Terry Canales, HD-40
Phillip Cortez, HD-117
Armando Martinez, HD-39
Eddie Morales, HD-74
Sergio Muñoz Jr, HD-36
Claudia Ordaz, HD-79
Richard Peña Raymond, HD-42
This issue of LSL also highlights the leadership of Democratic state Rep Gene Wu (D-HD-137). Calling him a “rock star,” LSL celebrates Wu for calling out Republicans’ racism in SB17 to his speech yesterday during the debate for SB1257, which will ban transgender care for adults, Wu has been relentless in his attacks against Republicans, LSL reports.
