Colin Allred showed the people of Texas in last night’s Senate debate that he stands tall for their values and interests, while his opponent, do-nothing Sen Ted Can-Cruz could only fall back on lies and scaremongering.
(One of the biggest lies was Can-Cruz repeatedly a well-debunked story that women boxers in the Olympics were actually men. One of several Cruz lies revealed by Houston Public Media in its fact check on the debate.)
Allred tore into the extreme right-winter on abortion, asking Can-Cruz directly whether he supported Texas’s draconian six-week abortion ban, which has zero exceptions for rape or incest. The question immediately put Can-Cruz, one of the strongest anti-choice politicians in America, on defense. Even when repeatedly asked, Cruz avoided answering, writes Jay Kuo in the Status Kuo.
Allred called him to account: “Senator Cruz just called himself pro-life — you’re not. It’s not pro-life to deny women care so long that they can’t have children anymore. It’s not pro-life to force a victim of rape to carry their rapist’s baby.”
And, “When Ted Cruz says he’s pro-life, he doesn’t mean yours.”
In Texas, some 26,000 women have already faced the fact that, under state law, they would be required after the sixth week to carry their rapist’s baby to term. A study published in January in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that Texas leads in rapes and rape-related pregnancies, when compared to states with total abortion bans. (emphasis mine)
Of course, many women would not even be aware that they were pregnant by the six-week deadline.
Texas froze while Cruz sunbathed in Cancun
Allred also jabbed at Cruz over his infamous vacation to Cancun, which Cruz took in the middle of a massive power outage in Texas during freezing temperatures.
Allred’s clear message here? When the rubber hits the road, Texas can’t count on Ted Can-Cruz.
Cruz sought to negate 2020 election results
The Democratic candidate also raised another strong negative for Cruz – his crusade to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Calling Cruz a “threat to democracy,” Allred recalled how he, as a Congressman, retrieved the gas mask under his seat and prepared to defend the House chamber from an attack by the mob.
And where was Ted? Hiding in a supply closet behind a stack of chairs.
Said Allred: “At the same time he’d gone around the country lying about the election, after he’d been the architect to try and overthrow that election, [and] when that mob came, Senator Cruz was hiding in a supply closet.”
