Biden remains the best candidate, and we will win in November

Trump - rapist, fraudster, traitor, felon - who was so manifestly unfit, so full of lies, so extreme and dangerous, so , how do we say it? - batshit crazy - last night that it remains hard to believe many hours later

Disappointed with the President’s performance in the debate? Well, don’t give up the ship. Do not surrender to defeatism in June, when we can definitely be victorious in November.

“Joe Biden did what he had to do in the debate,” said blogger Robert B Hubbell. “He was okay; not good; not bad; okay. But that was enough. Joe Biden will win the 2024 election if we do not surrender to defeatism.” (1)

What puzzles me is why the focus is on Biden, rather than the machine gun staccato of lies and distortions coming from the apparent Republican nominee.

Not to mention the complete absence of fact checking by CNN. While the moderators strove to force Trump to answer questions he repeatedly ignored, nothing was done about the endless parade of lies the Orange Convicted Felon spouted in the course of the 90-minute debate.

“[Biden] did the best he could with an opponent who is unconstrained by the truth and moderators perfectly willing to allow Trump to lie,” Hubbell wrote.

“Unfortunately, Biden started weak and finished strong, while Trump started strong and finished weak.”

Biden was on the receiving end of a “Gish gallop.” A Gish Gallop, explains bloggerJeff Tiedrich, is a rhetorical technique in which a person in a debate attempts to overwhelm their opponent by providing an excessive number of arguments with no regard for the accuracy or strength of those arguments. (2)

Trump was a brazen liar as usual, notes blogger Michelangelo Signorile. “one hilarious, memorable moment will be his stating, ‘I didn’t have sex with a porn star.’ Much worse than that, however, were the insulting lies that all Americans know are dangerous falsehoods. (3)

Signorile noted that Trump claimed the narrative around Charlottesville—that he said there were “fine people on both sides,” which we all watched him do—was “a story that has been totally wiped out.”

He claimed Nancy Pelosi’s own daughter vindicated him for the attack on the Capitol on January 6th and implicated her own mother. That’s total BS.

The President did not have a good night. But, as blogger Simon Rosenberg reminds us, “Joe Biden is a good President. The country is better off. We have a very strong case for reelection.

“The Democratic Party is strong, winning elections across the country, raising tons of money, blessed with a very strong farm team and building the most powerful political machine we’ve ever seen.

“And {Republicans] still have Trump - rapist, fraudster, traitor, felon - who was so manifestly unfit, so full of lies, so extreme and dangerous, so, how do we say it? - batshit crazy - last night that it remains hard to believe many hours later.”

Some have suggested that Biden step aside. That’s a terrible idea. The hypocrisy and double standard is sickening. One candidate on the stage lied from start to finish. And no one is suggesting that he drop out.

Tiedrich writes: “Inflation, covid, jobs, foreign policy, January 6th, climate change — every one of Donny’s “answers” followed the same format: mine was the greatest. it was the greatest ever. it was great. everyone said how great it was. the greatest. then he came in and now it’s a disaster. everyone says it’s a disaster. when I get back in it’s gonna be great again.”

I won’t make any excuses for Joe Biden’s sometimes tentative performance and hoarse voice during the debate. He did the best he could with an opponent who is unconstrained by the truth and moderators perfectly willing to allow Trump to lie. Unfortunately, Biden started weak and finished strong, while Trump started strong and finished weak. But many people had stopped watching after the first break.

“He lied, and then poured another lie on top of the lie, and then poured half-dozen half-truths and straw-men arguments on top of those lies. it was overwhelming.

No, it was not Biden’ best night. But this is a compassionate, capable man, and whom we can count on to tell us the truth and to do the right thing for America — not for Joe Biden..
