Saturday May 30, 2020 Austin American-Statesman Letter to the Editor by NSD member Sandra Paschall
Democrats believe in capitalism with oversight
I am a Democrat and not a socialist. I am tired of Republicans trying to define what being a Democrat means. I believe in capitalism, but it requires a lot of government oversight. Capitalism does not work unless the government requires that workers make a livable wage, have a safe work environment and good health care. The government should prevent monopolies, discrimination and damage to our natural resources. It should provide equal and respectable free education for all. This defines, in my mind, successful capitalism.
Capitalism under the Trump administration has gone amok. No environmental oversight, no livable wages, no concern about health care or the well being of workers or concern for our educational system. I have covered the very basics of what I think it takes to be a successful Democratic capitalist country. — Sandra Paschall, Lago Vista

Sunday April 14, 2019 from 4-6 PM Meet & Greet
Our speaker was Dana DeBeauvoir, Clerk of Travis County, who talked about the development and planned 2019 premier of the new STAR-Vote, a Secure, Transparent, Auditable, and Reliable voting system.
“Dana looks forward to speaking with the North Shore Democrats during their Meet and Greet, and sharing with them details about the new Voting System that we will be using in Travis County starting with the November 2019 Election. The new system, ExpressVote, manufactured by Election Systems and Software (ES&S) is an electronic voting system with a paper backup. Travis County is adopting this new system in response to the community’s desire to have a paper trail associated with their election process. This development will allow individual voters to review their choices on paper before they cast their ballot and it will allow for post-election audits of the election results, which fulfills Dana’s longtime goals of transparency and auditability in Elections, and will further enhance the security of the election process and voter confidence in democracy.”

Sunday January 13, 2019 from 4-6 PM Meet & Greet "Common Ground"
"Liberals and Conservatives Mingle over Topics of Mutual Interest"
It was a jam-packed Bluebonnet room last Sunday at the Lago Vista POA Activity Center, where an eclectic set of presentations on the environment, outdoors, and depolarization appealed to an enthusiastic audience.
The first speaker, Dr. Cyrus Reed of the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club said “I expected to talk to 10 or 12 folks and instead it’s a full house!” Dr. Reed encouraged his listeners to pay attention to the many environmental bills facing the 2019 Legislative Session. Regardless of feelings about climate change, he says, local issues faced by all Texans include rebuilding and planning for future hurricanes, clean air, water, and energy, oversight of oil and gas operations, and funding for public lands and wildlife.
Next, Carl Dieckmann spoke on The Turnback Canyon Trail Conservancy. Carl stunned the audience with his vision of 20 miles of trails connecting Lake Travis, Lakeside, Lago Vista and the Balcones Canyonlands NWR. Dieckmann’s enthusiasm was contagious, especially as he concluded “after 18 months in a conference room, we’re anxious to get out there and start building our first trails”.
The evening concluded with a presentation on depolarizing political discussion in America by Steve Saltwick, Republican, and Michael Seay, Democrat, of the Better Angels Organization. They explained the group’s “rule of balance”; that in any gathering, and at all levels of leadership, the participation is half red, half blue. On the spot, 17 volunteers of both parties signed up to bring this club to the North Shore. Ann Murrow, Republican, and Anna Johndrow, Democrat, volunteered to lead the fledgling group.
NSD President Anne Ochoa remarked “opening the meeting to members of all parties was an experiment, but one that seems to have worked!”

Topic: “Path to November”
Glen Maxey, Kathi Thomas, and Beau Harris, Field Organizer for Beto
Three speakers graced our presence on July 15, 2018 at our quarterly Meet & Greet in the Bluebonnet Room LVPOA Activity Center. “One senate vote matters!” said Beau Harris a field organizer for the Beto O’Rourke Campaign. "Texas is not a red state but a non-voting state. We need to inform our neighbors, knock on doors, start a texting program heading toward November."
Glen Maxey is in his 50th year of political service, 150 campaigns. Maxey was a six-term TX legislator. “Democrats had stopped talking about values that mattered” stated Maxey. He helped revitalize the Texas Democratic Party. Now there are Democrats running in 36 Congressional Districts after 138 Democrats came forward and three races are in the National spotlight.
Our third speaker, Kathi Thomas is a dear friend to NS Democrats having graced our LV July 4th Parade twice. As a political activist she says “We need to get out of our comfort zone”, to do the things that need to be done. She spoke of her interest in education, healthcare, environmental and most concerning to Kathi, immigration. She suggested we each tell our story when we walk, call, talk and write. Our club gave Kathi a gift of thanks with a bouquet of flowers.
The club business continued with the club’s data, digital and phone captains introducing themselves and asking for volunteers to sign up. “Organizing 101” training will be on August 2 at 6:30 pm. To attend call Anne 512-535-8006. The next quarterly Meet & Geet is scheduled for October 14, 2018 at 4 pm in the Bluebonnet Room 2601 American Drive.
